Mischa Barton may commit suicide

Mischa Barton is said to have recently collapsed at her Los Angeles home because she had allegedly snorted cocaine three days in a row.

The 23-year-old actress remained in an involuntary psychiatric hold after reportedly suffering a meltdown. Pals of the former O.C star informed police amid fears she would kill herself after three days of hard partying.

"She's in very bad shape. She's running out of money and can't find love, so now she is looking for a good time to escape her misery. She is on a downward spiral. She is a mess. She is a suicidal, uninsurable mess," the Daily Express quoted a friend as telling the New York Post.

Los Angeles police and Barton's representative have suggested that the actress required assistance for "a medical issue." They haven't revealed any further details.

The 22-year-old former "The O.C." star was in Tokyo promoting "Closing the Ring," a love story about a dying fighter pilot who tries to return a ring to his girlfriend who gets it back only 50 years later.

In the film directed by Richard Attenborough, best known for Oscar-winning biopic "Gandhi," Barton plays young Ethel Ann who is never able to fully recover from the death of her betrothed, Teddy Gordon, played by Stephen Amell.

"I don't have a problem with nudity," the British-born American actress said of her sex scene.

"Giving herself to Teddy, it's not your average sex scene. The nudity is about her innocence. There is something tragic and heartbreaking about it," she said.

"Perhaps to contemporary women it seems a bit more far-fetched but I believe in eternal love, in true love like that," she said. "I mean the greatest example is the director (Attenborough) and his wife."

But the star also said she was at odds with certain aspects of the character she portrayed.

"The only thing I don't agree with what happens to Ethel Ann is that she allows to embitter herself," Barton said. "She needed to learn to let go and she couldn't do that because she couldn't accept that."

"People are affected by tragedy and war in their own way, and some people are just permanently affected by it," she said.

Barton, whose credits include cameos in hit movies "The Sixth Sense" and "Notting Hill," was earlier this month sentenced to three years probation after being caught driving drunk and in possession of marijuana.

Mischa Barton was sentenced to three years of unsupervised probation in a Beverly Hills courtroom Thursday in her DUI case. The former O.C. star pleaded no contest to drunken driving in a plea deal reached with prosecutors and which will spare her jail time. In addition, a marijuana possession charge against Mischa was dropped (due to the small amount found, a source told to PEOPLE). Another charge of driving without a license was reduced to an infraction.

The actress did not attend the hearing. Her attorney, Anthony V. Salerno, was there on her behalf. "The DAs were very fair in handling this case," Salerno said outside the courtroom. "Mischa's glad the case has been resolved." Mischa was ordered to complete a three-month alcohol-education class and pay a fine of approximately $2,000. Legal experts say such a deal is common for first-time offenders.

In a statement released after the hearing, her lawyer added: "Ms. Barton understands the seriousness of this situation and assumes full responsibility for her actions. She and I are grateful to the Court and the District Attorney’s Office for the prompt and respectful resolution of the case."

The actress was arrested for DUI in Los Angeles on December 27, after sheriff deputies spotted her weaving between two lanes of traffic and she failed to signal when making a turn. On Jan. 10, Barton said on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-F.M. radio show: "Obviously I'm 100 percent responsible for my actions in this case. I'm really disappointed in myself. I don't know what to say about it, except that I'm not perfect, and I just don't ever intend to do something this stupid again."
